Congrats Jazz I on a great 2016 Essentially Ellington!!

Congrats to the members of the 2015-16 SPHS Jazz Ensemble I who successfully competed in the 21st annual "Essentially Ellington" national jazz Competition and Festival held at Rose Hall, May 5-7, 2016 in New York City. The band ended up placing 8th overall as well as receiving citations for outstanding performances.  Solo honors went to Sebastian Roman on Alto and Soprano Saxophone as well as Sydney Challoner on Trumpet.  Honorable mentions were given to Kayla Nelson on Baritone Saxophone and Robert Rockman on Banjo.

The band attended a question and answer session with Wynton Marsalis as well as a dinner with members the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and high school jazz musicians from across the country.  Members of the SPHS Jazz Ensemble also attended workshops on their instruments as well as a jam session in the beautiful Appel Room and Atrium.

While in New York, the band also visited Grand Central Station, the top of the Freedom Tower, Wall Street , Times Square, The Blue Note Jazz Club for a performance by jazz bass legend, Ron Carter. They also took a Sunday Cruise down the Hudson River to the Statue of Liberty, visited the "High Line" and took a walk through Central Park.

Overall, a very successful trip in which the students handled themselves with class and dignity - they represented Sun Prairie very well.

Thank you to all who supported the efforts of these students!
