About Sun Prairie High School Bands (both East & West):

Students in the Sun Prairie High School Band program participate in one of three concert bands:
  • Concert Band (two sections)
  • Wind Ensemble

Students must be enrolled in one of the following music classes to participate in co-curricular ensembles listed as follows:
Band:
1. Jazz Ensemble
2. Jazz Combos
3. Epoch Sound Pep Band
4. Sound of Sun Prairie Marching Band
5. Band Chamber Ensembles
6. District State Solo/Ensemble

All students in the Sun Prairie Band program receive weekly small group instruction from a district band staff member.

All band students also participate in a composer or conductor in residence program that features a guest composer or conductor working with all of the concert bands at both East and West High Schools. Past composers include: Charles Rochester Young, Jim Bonney, Sam Hazo, Richard Saucedo, Frank Ticheli, Jonathan Newman, Michael Daugherty, Michael Markowski, Wataru Hokoyama, Kim Archer, David Maslanka, Erika Savano, Omar Thomas, and Marie Douglas.

The Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform at both the Wisconsin WMEA and WNBA convention, and regional MENC conventions in Minneapolis and Cincinnati and the National MENC, as well as collaborated with the Wind Ensembles of UW-Madison, UW-Stevens Point, and Carroll University in preparation of new music and concert performance.

WSMA Member Eligibility Requirements
To participate in a WSMA Music Festival, the school must be a current member of WSMA. In addition, students must meet the following requirements:
1.  Be in grades 6 through 12 - Comment: 5th grade students enrolled in a regularly rehearsing concert group with older students may be included in a Concert Festival or Clinic Experience.
  1. Be enrolled and regularly attend concert group rehearsals (band, choir, orchestra) at their WSMA member school.
Exceptions to this requirement are determined by the school and can include, but are not limited to:
    1. School does not offer an appropriate group in which the student may participate.
    2. Schedule conflict with an academic class required for graduation.
    3. In such cases, eligibility is determined at the school level by the building principal or their designee(s).

WSMA allows schools to adopt additional eligibility policies and expectations to participate in WSMA Festivals.
