Last Year's Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival Music on NPR

Last year's Essentially Ellington top 3 finalists are being featured in a program being broadcast on National Public Radio during this month.  More information is posted here. Next year's broadcast will be featuring Sun Prairie!

From the Sun Prairie Band Boosters President, George Smith

Congratulations to the members of Jazz I on being 1 of 15 bands invited to the “Essentially Ellington” finals in New York this May.  82 bands from the United States and Canada competed for these 15 spots.  For more information on this competition see www.essentiallyellington.org. On April 28 from 6-10pm at SPHS, we will be working on our music to be played in New York. We will have a 4-hour clinic with Loren Schoenberg (of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks orchestra and consultant for Jazz at Lincoln Center). This clinic is sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center. It will be a great night and all are invited to check it out!

Of course, all of the jazz ensembles will be participating in the Big Band Dance at Angell Park on Thursday, March 27, from 7:30-11:30pm. This will be your last chance to get on your dancing shoes and enjoy the music of the big band era. It is also an important fundraising night for our program. Also, some of the middle school jazz bands will be joining us for a brief performance. This is a great chance to meet and greet some 7th and 8th grade band parents! Hope to see you there – it’s a lot of fun!
